akarta Deputy Governor Basuki 'Ahok' Tjahaja Purnama was deeply moved after a screening of the street musician documentary Jalanan at City Hall last week, according to the director of the film.
'Pak Ahok was in tears, and immediately vowed to shake up many of the city government's outdated, inhumane policies toward the marginalized poor,' director Daniel Ziv said in an email.
Ahok vowed to close the social detention centers where poor people without identity cards are detained, as depicted in the film, and to reach out to the poor.
'Many government officials are like unreachable deities. Even God is easier to reach than some government officials. To reach God you only need to pray,' Ahok said, according to the statement.
According to Ziv, Ahok gave his personal cell phone number to the film's subjects Titi, Boni and Ho.
