ormer Democratic Party chairman Anas Urbaningrum will hear indictments relating to his alleged involvement in a graft and money laundering case surrounding the construction of the Hambalang sports complex in his first trial at the Jakarta Corruption Court on Friday.

'€œAnas will be indicted, for allegedly receiving bribes and being involved in money laundering, on Friday,'€ Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK) spokesperson Johan Budi said on Wednesday, as quoted by kompas.com.

Anas has been detained since January after the KPK named him a suspect on corruption charges in the Hambalang case. The commission later also named the politician a suspect in relation to money laundering charges after investigating his assets.

Earlier, Anas'€™s lawyer Sadly Hasibuan said KPK prosecutors stated in the indictment that his client had embezzled funds to support his ambition to run in the presidential election.

In a court hearing on May 14, graft convict Muhammad Nazaruddin, who is also a former Democratic Party treasurer, said that the 2.5 trillion (US$214 million) Hambalang project was one of several multi-trillion rupiah state projects rigged by Anas.

He further said that Anas, who had immense power as head of the ruling party faction at the House of Representatives, attempted to rig the projects to collect as much money as possible to not only pay for his Dems party chairmanship bid in 2010 but also to finance his long-term plan to run in the country'€™s presidential election.
