BPOM shines spotlight on Cadbury, Bourbon

T

he Food and Drug Monitoring Agency (BPOM) says it will increase the monitoring of imported products following widespread suspicions that a number of dairy products circulating in Indonesia contain pork.

Concerns over food containing pork emerged after reports on the Internet revealed that two Malaysian-manufactured Cadbury chocolate products, namely Cadbury Milk Roast Almond and Cadbury Milk Hazelnut, contained pork.

'€œBased on data from the BPOM, Cadbury [Dairy Milk Roast Almond] registered with the agency with distribution number BPOM RI ML 841601105136, does not have halal certification from the Indonesia Ulema Council [MUI],'€ the agency said in a release made available to The Jakarta Post on Thursday.

It further said that Cadbury (Milk Hazelnut) found in shops was not yet registered at the BPOM.

'€œThe BPOM has never issued any importation letter for those two products, so if consumers see the products for sale, we confirm they are illegal,'€ the agency said, adding it was acting to ensure that the illegal products did not enter Indonesia'€™s market.

The BPOM added it was also monitoring potato chips under the brand Bourbon (Petit Consomme Potato), manufactured by food company the Bourbon Corporation, which also allegedly contained pork.

'€œWe are pulling the products from the shelves of distributors and will monitor Bourbon products more intensively, as it is suspected they contain pork,'€ said the BPOM.

The agency further said it would immediately revoke product distribution licenses and bring the case to the court if Bourbon was found guilty of using pork in its products or violating other regulations. (fss/ebf)
