Haj quota will be allocated fairly: Acting minister

A

cting religious affairs minister Agung Laksono has said that the remainingquota for the 2014 haj pilgrimage will be allocated based on the order ofregistration to increase transparency.

The statement was made to calm anxiety in relation to the Corruption EradicationCommission's (KPK) investigation into embezzlement allegedly committed byformer religious affairs minister Suryadharma Ali during the organization ofthe haj to Saudi Arabia in 2012-2013.

Furthermore, KPK also accused Suryadharma of abusing his powers by allegedly flying dozens of people, reportedly relatives, friends, fellow officials, lawmakers and staff members, to join him on a haj pilgrimage using state funds.

"We will allocate the haj quota based on the order that [the pilgrims] are registered nationally in order to increase transparency," Agung, who is also People's Welfare Coordinating Minister, said on Friday, as quoted by tribunnews.com.

Agung also warned people who had registered for the haj to reject illegal offers that promised them easier paths to the haj program.

On Friday, the ministry's director-general for haj and umrah (minor pilgrimage) Anggito Abimanyu asked to be relieved of his position in order to allow him to focus on the investigation into the alleged haj graft case. (fss/dic)
