hecapital of West Manggarai regency in East Nusa Tenggara, Labuan Baju, locatednear the world-famous Komodo Island, has been blanketed by volcanic ashoriginating from the explosion of Mt. Sangiang, in Bima, West Nusa Tenggara.

'€œThe ash is sticking to people'€™s vehicles and houses and has also restricted visibility,'€ resident Benyamin Jemalu told The Jakarta Post on Friday.

He said the ash had seriously disrupted activities. '€œI hope the government will be able to tackle the situation.'€

Head of West Manggarai Disaster Mitigation Agency Donatus Jabur said the local government had built a crisis center in Labuan Bajo. The crisis center was tasked with closely monitoring the situation and providing assistance to local residents.

He said besides Labuan Bajo, five other subdistricts were affected by the volcanic ash. They are South Lembor, Lembor, Sano Nggoang, Komodo and Mbeliling.

Several boats bringing tourists to Komodo Island have postponed their journeys.

Mount Sangiang exploded in Friday afternoon, spewing ash about 3 kilometers into the air. Dozens of local residents were evacuated but no casualties have been reported.(dic)
