Police urged to respond quicker to Yogya prayer group attack

N

ational Commission onHuman Rights (Komnas HAM) commissioner Siti Noor Laila has asked the YogyakartaPolice to speed up their investigation into the attack on the CatholicRosario-recital group, in which five people were injured.

'€œThe Yogyakarta Police have a bad track record in solving crimes relating to minority religious groups. They have never been able to prove that the state protects religious groups and guarantees their right to worship,'€ she said on Saturday.

She also added the absence of serious investigations had caused similar actions to reoccur.

Various Catholic groups like the Indonesian Catholic Student Association (PMKRI), the Association of Catholic Scholars (Iska), Catholic Youths and Catholic Women have asked the police to be serious in handling the investigation.

'€œThe police are being challenged to unveil the true motives behind the attack,'€ the groups said in a statement sent to The Jakarta Post.

An attack on a Catholic Rosario-recital group at a house in the STIE YKPN housing complex injured five people.

Julius Felicianus, director of the Galang Press publishing house and the house'€™s owner, was severely injured and was recovering at Panti Rapih Hospital.

Kompas TV journalist Michael Aryawan'€™s camera was taken by the attackers.

Police have arrested one of the suspected assailants, identified as KH, who is Julius'€™ neighbor. (fss/dic)
