oping for a respite from the central government regarding the requirement to pay export tax on mining concentrates, PT Newmont Nusa Tenggara (PT NNT), a copper mining company operating in Batu Hijau, West Sumbawa, West Nusa Tenggara (NTB), has postponed a plan to lay off more than 3,000 workers.

In May, PT NNT said its copper concentrate storage facility in Batu Hijau was full and it was, therefore, forced to stop processing copper and halt production. The company also stated that it would place 80 percent of its 3,200 workers on standby as of June 1 this year.

'€œHowever, the company has postponed the plan to place workers on standby while waiting for the outcome of a ministerial meeting that will be held this week,'€ said PT NNT spokesman Rubi W. Purnomo on Tuesday in a press release made available to The Jakarta Post in Mataram.

According to Rubi, the delayed implementation of the policy is aimed at obtaining certainty regarding whether the company would promptly acquire an export permit.
