Akil slams KPK as '€˜unethical'€™

F

ormer chairman of the Constitutional Court Akil Mochtar demanded that the leaders of the Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK) undergo an ethics trial because they had already announced his sentence before the indictment.

"They announced [I could face] a life sentence before the indictment," he said at the Jakarta Corruption Court on Monday, as reported by kompas.com.

On the sidelines of the trial, Akil complained about media reports that quoted KPK deputy chairman Busyro Muqoddas as saying he would receive a life sentence.

Previously, KPK chairman Abraham Samad had also said Akil deserved a life sentence as he was arrested for accepting bribes when he was in charge of the highest judiciary institution.

Before the prosecutor read the indictment on Monday, Akil had said there was no use reading it again because it had already been reported by the media.

Akil, who was caught red-handed accepting a bribe in October last year, is currently standing trial for acquiring Rp 57 billion (US$4.8 million) from the alleged rigging of 10 elections, as well as for laundering a total of Rp 160 billion during his term at the court and Rp 20 billion when he was at the House of Representatives.

Akil added that indictments should be based on facts presented at court, and not based on the desires of the KPK or the general public.

"This is more a phony trial and not a trial on the basis of law. This is complete nonsense; we are a country of law. They [KPK] just don't understand the law," he said. (fss)
