ndonesian Democratic Party of Struggle (PDI-P) executive Puan Maharani has expressed optimism that presidential candidate Joko "Jokowi" Widodo and his running mate Jusuf Kalla would garner a large amount of overseas votes.
Puan, who is also the daughter of PDI-P chairperson Megawati Soekarnoputri, said she projected PDI-P could win 60 percent of overseas votes, as reported by Antara news agency.
"Campaigns using social media are strategic. We are also trying to empower our party members and supporters who are currently abroad," she said.
Puan urged the General Elections Commission (KPU) to prioritize the distribution of absentee ballots for voters overseas. She also called on the Elections Monitoring Agency (Bawaslu) to oversee voting so that it went smoothly.
The KPU said that 190.2 million people have been registered on the final voter list, comprising 188.2 million domestic voters and 2.03 million voters registered overseas.
Furthermore, the KPU said that there would be 498 polling stations set up abroad and 478,883 polling stations domestically. (fss)
