Prabowo meets sultan in Yogyakarta

P

residential candidate Prabowo Subianto with his entourage met with Yogyakarta Governor Sultan Hamengkubuwono X at the sultan'€™s palace in Yogyakarta on Tuesday. Hamengkubuwono acknowledged that he and Prabowo didn't have any serious conversation during the one-hour visit.

'€œWe just met and there was nothing specific that we discussed,'€ Hamengkubuwono said on Tuesday.

The meeting was held in the southern part of the sultan'€™s palace. Among Prabowo'€™s entourage were former Yogyakarta mayor Herry Zudianto, musician Ahmad Dhani and his wife Mulan Jameela, Hidayat Nur Wahid and Aburizal Bakrie.

Hamengkubuwono has pledged to remain neutral in the presidential election.

'€œI don'€™t want to confuse people'€™s preference with mine,'€ he said.

Prabowo and his entourage continued their visit to the Kauman grand mosque, which is located near the sultan'€™s palace. Prabowo was greeted by the shouts of "God is great" from hundreds of members of Islamic organization the Ka'€™bah Youth Organization (GPK), a youth-wing organization of the United Development Party (PPP).

GPK leader Muhammad Fuad, who attended the event, said his organization believed that Prabowo as a leader would protect the interests of Islam against what he considered its adversaries, i.e. communists, Ahmadis and Shites.

Prabowo performed his evening prayer in the mosque and also heard a speech delivered by local cleric Haidar Waluyo. In his speech, Haidar criticized religious pluralism.

Prabowo then visited businessman Probosutedjo'€™s house to attend a declaration made by a group of his supporters there. Probosutedjo, half-brother of the late president Soeharto, declined to give any statement to the press regarding Prabowo'€™s visit. (dic)
