PT Telekomunikasi Indonesia Tbk (Telkom) and PT Bank Pembangunan Daerah Sumatera Utara (Bank Sumut) have announced the launching of the electronic money service, Bank Sumut T-Money Card, a collaboration between the two companies. Executives from both companies signed the collaboration agreement on July 2.

'€œThe T-money platform collaboration between Telkom and Bank Sumut is in accordance with the encouragement from Bank Indonesia (BI) to develop a cash-less payment system,'€ said Telkom'€™s enterprise and business service director, Muhammad Awaluddin. He added that he hoped the cash-less system would simplify financial transactions in society, especially in the transportation sector.

Bank Indonesia (BI) is currently pushing the less cash society (LCS) movement through the development of e-money systems in nine cities throughout Indonesia, one of which is Medan, North Sumatra, where Bank Sumut operates.

Data from the BI stated that just 1 percent of Indonesians are currently using e-money, concentrated mainly in Java, Sumatra and some parts of Sulawesi. They are using it mostly for transportation expenses like tolls, fuel and parking fees.

T-money is a product of Telkom that provides pre-paid e-money services for both online and offline transactions. The company has acquired the license to provide e-money services, with all the necessary infrastructure; and the service is currently being used by regional banks across the country who have yet not acquired the permit.

Card credit can be refilled through Bank Sumut branches and at the bank'€™s ATMs, as well as through other merchants who have the T-money logo. Telkom and Bank Sumut target 5000 users of T-Money card this year.

Already, e-money can be used at the Railink-Medan airport train station, which connects the city of Medan with the Kualanamu International Airport. It will soon also be available as a payment method for the Belmera (Belawan '€“ Medan '€“ Tanjung Morawa) toll road.
