he East Jakarta District Court found musician Ahmad Dhani's youngest son, Abdul "Dul" Qadir Jaelani, guilty on charges of negligence on Tuesday but did not sentence him to a one-year suspended sentence with two years probation, as originally sought by prosecutors.
In early September 2013, the 13-year-old Dul got into an accident while driving illegally on the Jagorawi toll road, causing a pileup in which seven people were killed and 11 others were injured.
"I would like to thank the judges and the prosecutors. I would like to thank everyone who supported me, including my mother, my siblings, my father and all the reporters. I would especially like to thank God. Thank you everyone for all your prayers," Dul said after hearing the verdict, as reported by tribunnews.com.
The judges said that even though Dul was guilty of violating the 2009 Traffic Law, they let him go free based on restorative justice, as stipulated by Law No. 11/2012 on the juvenile justice system. The panel of judges said that his parents could still provide moral guidance to Dul while he remained young.
Following the accident, Dul was hospitalized for nearly four weeks and underwent five operations at Pondok Indah Hospital in South Jakarta. (fss)
