President holds meeting to discuss ISIL threat

P

resident Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono summoned on Monday several ministers and other officials to the Presidential Palace to discuss several political, legal and national defense issues, including the threat of the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIL) entering Indonesia.

Presidential spokesman Julian Aldrin Pasha declined to elaborate on the meeting agenda, but noted that the meeting would discuss issues relating to human rights as well.

'€œPolitical, legal and human rights issues will definitely be on the agenda today,'€ he said briefly as quoted by kompas.com.

Meeting participants included Coordinating Political, Legal and Security Affairs Minister Djoko Suyanto, National Police chief Gen. Sutarman, Indonesian Military (TNI) commander Gen. Moeldoko, National Intelligence Agency (BIN) chief Lt. Gen. Marciano Norman and Attorney General Basrief Arief.

Religious Affairs Minister Lukman Hakim Syaifuddin, Finance Minister Chatib Basri and Foreign Minister Marty Natalegawa were also reportedly in attendance.

Each of the officials declined to comment on the meeting until it was finished. However, Gen. Moeldoko reportedly confirmed earlier that he had been summoned to the Presidential Palace to discuss the threat of ISIL.

ISIL recently started to spread its influence in Indonesia through a video uploaded on YouTube showing a group of Indonesian nationals calling on fellow Indonesian Muslims to join the militant group'€™s cause.

The National Counterterrorism Agency previously issued a warning stating that any Indonesian citizen joining ISIL, which has been internationally deemed a terrorist group, could have their citizenship revoked. (dyl)
