The Malang regency administration suspects the presence of Islamic State of Iraq and Syria (ISIS) agents in the area.
"I have received reports of the activities of an ISIS network in the regency of Malang. I will discuss that matter today with other related agencies before we take firm measures," Malang Regent Rendra Kresna said on Tuesday as quoted by Antara news agency.
ISIS agents, who are suspected of entering the regency in July, began activities in the villages of Sempu and Gadingkulon in the Dau district.
A mosque built in 2013, but which had never been used by local people for religious services, served as the headquarters for ISIS to expand its influence, Rendra said.
He said the regency administration was still waiting for instructions from Jakarta while continuing to monitor the activities of the organization. (hhr)
