Students protest slow progress in rape case

A

round 50 students from the University of Indonesia (UI) staged a demonstration at the Jakarta Police headquarters in South Jakarta to protest the slow investigation into a rape case implicating noted poet Sitok Srengenge.

UI student executive board chairman Ivan Riansa said there were rumors that the police were going to halt the investigation based on reports that Sitok was in a relationship with the rape victim, an UI student.

'€œWe don'€™t understand why the case is being handled by the [Jakarta Police Criminal Detective Directorate'€™s] national security sub-directorate. The case should be handled by the sub-directorate on children, adolescents and women'€™s affairs,'€ he told reporters.
