Aulia Masna: Loyal to Apple

For several years, Aulia Masna has been known among Indonesia'€™s gadget freaks as one of the most influential technology bloggers, especially on Apple products.

'€œI started using Apple products casually in 1993 and started using them full time in 1998 when I was finally able to afford one for personal use. I'€™ve owned multiple Mac desktops and laptops since and have now expanded to iPhones and iPads,'€ Aulia says.

'€œI find it difficult to work using devices from other brands, not so much because of the quality of the devices but due to the operating systems and the quality of the applications that run on them. I'€™m sure that other computer makers also have quality products but because they all run Windows, which I find very difficult to use, I simply avoid them.'€

Aulia'€™s passion for Apple products was what started his career as a tech-blogger. Shortly after he completed his education in Melbourne, Australia and returned to Jakarta, he was hired by an Apple reseller as part of the company'€™s design team. Several years later in 2008, Macworld Indonesia appointed him as its executive editor.

Currently, Aulia is the chief editor of DailySocial, a news blog that covers the technology startup, telco and Internet business landscape in Indonesia.

'€œI haven'€™t written an article for DailySocial since May due to spending the time mentoring new hires in addition to editing DailySocial'€™s three blogs '€” DailySocial, DailySocial English and our latest venture, DailySocial Enterprise.'€

As for Aulia'€™s gadget preferences, he still maintains his loyalty for Apple products, although he also sometimes uses Android-based gadgets as a backup.

Gadgets

The primary gadgets that I use daily are my 16GB iPhone 5, 13 inch MacBook Air and my first generation iPad mini.

I'€™ve also used Android since the early days. My first Android phone was a Nexian Journey, which ran the Android version 1.5 (Donut) platform and later 1.6 (Eclair).

I'€™ve had the Nexus One running Gingerbread, a Samsung tablet running Android 3.0 (Honeycomb), a Samsung Galaxy S3 on Ice Cream Sandwich and later Jelly Bean, as well as an Oppo Find 5 running Jelly Bean.

I tried using all of them as my full-time devices but it'€™s difficult to suppress the urge to go back to iOS for more than a week. I always end up using Android phones as my backup devices. These days though, my secondary device is a Lumia 920 running Windows Phone 8.1.1.

Applications

I find that applications that run on Mac OS/OS X and iOS have better quality, are more stable, more user-friendly, and induce far less stress on the user. Apple'€™s operating systems and the applications than run on them allow me to work without having to make sure the apps themselves work. I don'€™t worry about crashes, incompatibilities, viruses, malware, etc.

I use Slack for communications at work, Tweetbot for Twitter, iA Writer to write my articles and, of course, WordPress mobile apps on the iPad and iPhone for editing articles.
