opular ballad singer Iwan Fals set about planting 6,000 trees in Taman Perdamaian Nusantara park at Bukit Tondo, Palu, Central Sulawesi, on Saturday.
'A tree, which is planted, can save 1,000 people. So if we cut down a tree, it means we kill 1,000 people on Earth,' Iwan said.
The tree planting was a joint effort between OI, the name given to Iwan's fan club, and the Palu municipality, and is aimed at transforming the city into a green city.
However, in another part of the city at the Bundanran park on Jl. Hasanudin, the municipality's park agency was cutting down trees to create a parking lot. 'It's crazy, here am I with Iwan Fals planting trees, and there's tree cutting going on over there,' Palu Deputy Mayor Andi Mulhanan Tombolotutu said in response to journalists' questions.
Andi then called the agency head to stop him cutting down the trees.
