our days after being reported missing in the Malacca Strait a ship'€™s crewman, identified as M. Kharis Suhud, was found floating dead in Tanjung Jati Luar waters in Riau province on Sunday.

Kharis, 22, a resident of Sepahat village, Bukit Batu district, Bengkalis regency, was one of three crew members of a pompong (small boat) who jumped into the sea on the way home from Malaysia on Thursday when they heard gunshots coming from a Customs and Excise patrol boat. Two of the crew survived while Kharis went missing.

'€œThe search was a bit difficult because of bad weather. But finally Kharis was found still near the location where he jumped,'€ said Bengkalis Search and Rescue post head Likopa Nop Thilos.

It is still unclear who chased the crew. Nor is the whereabouts of Suhud'€™s pompong known, or the reason why the crew would avoid a patrol boat.

Law Enforcement Unit head of the Bengkalis Maritime Police Chief Brig. Teguh Rahmad said one of the survivors said boat had '€œBC 1603'€ on its hull. '€œBut we have checked with Bengkalis Customs. They don'€™t have a patrol boat with that number.'€
