Film festival to draw eyes to Indonesia

T

he upcoming Indonesian film festival in Los Angeles, the US, is expected to be an eye-opener for world filmmakers regarding Indonesia'€™s rich talent and creative industry.

Tourism and Creative Economy Minister Mari Elka Pangestu expressed hope that the festival, known as the Los Angeles Indonesian Film Festival (LAIFF), would bring about production cooperation between Indonesian and Hollywood filmmakers.

"There have been several films using sets in Indonesia. Through the festival we expect further collaboration," she told a press conference at the @america center in Pacific Place, South Jakarta, on Wednesday.

To make the opportunity more appealing, the ministry is offering an integrated clearinghouse authorized to issue permits and licensing required in movie production.

"The one-stop service, which has been in place for the past two to three years, works in collaboration with the Industry and Trade Ministry, customs and regional authorities [in locations] where shooting will take place," Mari Elka said, adding that the process may only take a few months to complete.

The first non-competition festival event is slated to be held on Sept. 3 '€“ 4 at the Regent Theater, Westwood Village, and will showcase award-winning feature-length and short movies produced by Indonesian filmmakers.

Among the feature films to be screened are Sang Penari (The Dancer), 9 Summers 10 Autumns, Soegija, Lovely Man and Sokola Rimba.
