Comments: Prabowo has yet to congratulate Jokow

A

strong>Aug. 24, p1

As president-elect Joko '€œJokowi'€ Widodo and vice president-elect Jusuf Kalla prepare to govern, losing presidential candidate Prabowo Subianto has yet to publicly congratulate them, or indeed concede defeat.

Jokowi has several times expressed hiswillingness to mend fences, toning down any animosity and past rivalry and saying that he and Kalla were '€œgood friends'€ with Prabowo.

Your comments:

I think it has rather to do with '€œcommon courtesy'€, which for example also includes letting an older person sit if no other chair is empty, or holding a door open for the next person to pass, letting a car into a lane, not passing gas in a full elevator and so on.

It is also mentioned that Prabowo indeed did not concede defeat (yet?).

It is very likely the former general simply cannot get over losing the presidency when his strategy was sure to win. Even President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono'€™s party backed him about two months before the election.

He must be having sleepless nights from losing so narrowly. Only a general who has a reputation as a gentleman would be gracious in the present circumstances. Leave him alone fellas!

'€œLosing so narrowly'€ is what the people around him would like him to believe. So he could sleep better than if he knew that he'€™d lost big time.

Losing face is shameful, especially when the source is your own doing. Having an attitude of denial is nothing new in Indonesian society.

For example, at a mall, a man took his trolley up an escalator. He knew that there was a sign to not take shopping trolleys beyond that point.

At the top of the escalator, a security guard was standing. He told the idiot that shopping carts were not allowed up the escalators and beyond that point. The shopper said with anger that he would leave it there. He had many bags of grocery shopping in the cart. His wife was on the phone and his kids on their cell phones as they walked slowly behind the loser.

I happened to walk by. I asked him who was going to take the trolley back down the escalator and leave it behind the limit point.

Is this how you teach your kids to disobey signs? The rule-breaker looked at me with surprise.

The security guard smiled at me. I just walked away.
