Gerindra chairman passes away at 62

erindra Party chairman Suhardi passed away at the Pertamina Central Hospital in South Jakarta late on Thursday, a fellow politician has announced.

United Development Party (PPP) secretary general M. Romahurmuziy said that the professor-turned politician died at 9.35 p.m. He was 62 years old.

"His doctor said that he had been suffering from lung cancer stadium IV," he told The Jakarta Post via text message.

Suhardi had chaired the party since it was founded by former presidential candidate Prabowo Subianto in 2008.

Before becoming a full-time politician, Suhardi was an agriculture and forestry professor at the Yogyakarta-based Gadjah Mada University.

He attained his master and doctoral degrees from the University of the Philippines, Los Baños.
