he Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK) on Wednesday said it would question Indonesian Democratic Party of Struggle (PDI-P) chairwoman Megawati Soekarnoputri in its investigation into alleged irregularities in the 'release and discharge' policy for Bank Indonesia Liquidity Assistance (BLBI) debtors.
The BLBI scandal revolves around the fate of Rp 702 trillion of Bank Indonesia bailout funds, during the 1997-1998 Asian financial crisis. Misuse of the funds led to state losses in the hundreds of trillions of rupiah.
Former president Megawati issued Presidential Decree No. 8/2002, which regulated the 'release and discharge' letters, freeing recipients of the funds from the obligation to fully pay the debts.
'We have no doubts about questioning [Megawati] in the case. I will soon meet with investigators to discuss the possible questioning [of Megawati]. Everyone is equal before the law. We questioned Vice President Boediono [in the Bank Century case] in the past,' KPK chairman Abraham Samad said on Wednesday.
The KPK has questioned a number of Megawati's former ministers from the PDI-P, including Rini Mariani Soemarno, currently the head of president-elect Joko 'Jokowi' Widodo's so-called transition team.
