Transjakarta bus with serial number TJ 0022 caught fire before reaching a bus station near the Al Azhar Grand Mosque in Central Jakarta on Thursday.
A number of explosions were heard emanating from the ill-fated bus, which started to catch fire at around 7:35 a.m., according to Transjakarta's users community Twitter account, @infobusway.
Passengers were yelling in panic while those at the bus station also dispersed.
'Officers were clearing out the shelter before trying to extinguish the fire with APAR [portable fire extinguisher] but failed because the fire had already been getting uncontrollable,' the account wrote.
No casualties were reported after the officers extinguished the fire around 8:35 a.m.
The bus was one of the was the new coupled models, a Yutong, operated by Transjakarta Public Service Agency. (put)
