uthorities in the Dominican Republic searched Friday for survivors after a small boat carrying about 20 migrants capsized off the eastern tip of the country as they apparently tried to reach Puerto Rico.
The body of one woman, a 47-year-old from Haiti, was recovered and another migrant was hospitalized, according to Amado Avila, director of the civil defense agency for the area.
The survivor told officials that all the rest on board had managed to swim safely to shore but authorities were searching the waters off the town of Bavaro to make sure, said Juan Pablo Sandoval, a navy spokesman.
Authorities recovered the boat and it had no visible damage. The vessel overturned Thursday shortly after the migrants set off with the apparent intention of crossing the Mona Passage to reach the U.S. island territory.
