Former Laskar Jihad leaders to be guarantors

T

he defense team of Abdul Kholiq, accused of religious-based crime in Sleman, has proposed Jafar Umar Thalib and Umar Said, who are former leaders of the defunct Laskar Jihad paramilitary group, as guarantors for Kholiq being released.

'€œAs a consequence, they must be willing and able to present the defendant in the trial. Why? Because the main hearing must be carried out in the defendant'€™s presence,'€ said presiding judge Marliyus at the Sleman District Court on Thursday, in discussing a possible plea bargain.

After the plea, Marliyus received a letter of guarantee on the release of Kholiq on bail from his defense team. Thalib is also caretaker of the Ihya As Sunnah Islamic boarding school in Degolan, Sleman.

Kholiq has been accused of attacking members of a Catholic congregation who were worshiping at the house of Julius Felicianus in Ngaglik, Sleman, on May 29 this year.
