ndonesia was yet again left with no contenders in the women's singles at the BWF (Badminton World Federation) badminton championship in Copenhagen, Denmark, on Thursday, after Lindaweni Fanetri bowed out to South Korea's Sung Ji Hyun 21-10, 21-16 in the third round.
She followed compatriot Bellaetrix Manuputty, who exited the tournament on Wednesday at the hands of Chinese Taipei's Tzu Ying Tai.
Lindaweni, who had been expected to advance to the quarterfinals, expressed her disappointment with the result and hoped for better performances ahead.
'I hope I can perform better in future matches. I will prepare myself for the Asian Games after this,' she said in a press release from the Indonesian Badminton Association (PBSI).
Indonesia's hopes, lifted by young pair Anggia Shitta Awanda/Della Destiara Haris' shock defeat of first seed Bao Yixin/Tang Jinhua of China on Wednesday, appeared short-lived as many of the squad faced tough opponents in the third round on Thursday.
PBSI chairman Gita Wirjawan congratulated Anggia and Della on their victory.
'Congratulations to Anggia and Della on their win. Their spirit shall be emulated by other shuttlers. We show that even the strongest opponents can be defeated,' Gita said.
'Hopefully the win can boost the spirits of Anggia and Della and the remaining squad members in the next rounds. I believe all of them will give their best for the sake of seeing the Merah-Putih [the red-and-white national flag] lifted in Denmark,' he added.
The Anggia/Della pair was only formed last year, debuting at the 2013 Indonesia Open Grand Prix Gold in September. Now the pair is ranked 19th in the world.
They will play host pair Line Damkjaer Kruse/Marie Roepke in the third round later on Thursday.
Two other women's doubles pairs, Greysia Polii/Nitya Krishinda Maheswari and Pia Zebadiah Bernadet/Rizki Amelia Pradipta, were scheduled to face Danes Christinna Pedersen/Kamilla Rhytter Juhl and Jang Ye-na/Kim So-young of South Korea, respectively.
Angga Pratama/Ryan Agung Saputra, who spearhead Indonesia's men's doubles efforts in the absence of reigning champions Hendra Setiawan/Mohammad Ahsan due to injury, won a hard-fought match against host pair Mads Conrad-Petersen/Mads Pieler Kolding 17-21, 21-19, 21-19.
Berry Angriawan/Ricky Karanda Suwardi, on the other hand, bowed out to the more experienced compatriot pairing of Gideon Markus Fernaldi/Markis Kido, who ousted them 21-15, 23-25, 21-9.
They were paired against Thailand's Wannawat Ampunsuwan/Patiphat Chalardchaleam ' who were given a walkover into the third round due to the absence of Hendra/Ahsan ' and China's Liu Xiaolong/Qiu Zihan, respectively.
The only Indonesian hopeful in men's singles event Tommy Sugiarto remains in contention after crushing Russia's Vladimir Malkov 21-6, 21-13, with Tommy's next opponent being China's Hu Yun.
