State-owned electricity company PT PLN will soon operate new coal-fired power plant in North Sumatra, which is now near completion.
The Pangkalan Susu power plant, which is currently being constructed by Chinese company Guangdong Power Engineering Corporation, is expected to begin commercial operations in October.
PLN president director Nur Pamudji said the power plant, located in Langkat regency, successfully generated more than 100 megawatts (MW) of electricity during a trial launch recently. 'The power generated reached 200 MW and it was transmitted to Medan in North Sumatra and West Sumatra,' he said as quoted by kontan.co.id on Thursday.
According to Pamudji, the electricity supplied by the power plant will help solve a power-supply deficit in the province, which is estimated to reach 120 MW during peak hours.
He said the power would be transmitted through a 275-kilovolt grid to Binjai power substations, which would then distribute it to various regions across the province. 'There are several prospective customers from industry and the business sector waiting for the electricity supplies,' he added.
