he National Police are resuming an inquiry into National Police Commission (Kompolnas) member Adrianus Meliala over his statement that police officials often exploited criminal investigations divisions at regional police level to enrich themselves.
National Police deputy chief Comr. Gen. Badrodin Haiti on Thursday rejected a suggestion that the investigation was an attempt to criminalize Adrianus, a noted criminologist from the University of Indonesia.
'He is being questioned as a witness. We are still studying whether or not [his comment] is a criminal offense,' he said.
Adrianus has been questioned for allegedly defaming the force in an interview on Metro TV, in which he said that criminal investigation divisions at the regional police level were often exploited like 'automatic teller machines.'
Badrodin also lambasted Adrianus' complaint that the latter had not received special treatment, like those granted to three-star generals, during the questioning session on Tuesday.
'As far as I know we never had an agreement on that issue. Being treated like a general does not have an impact on this investigation,' he said.
