S

tate-run telecommunication company PT Telekomunikasi Indonesia (Telkom), through its subsidiary PT Telekomunikasi Indonesia Internasional (Telin) has officially joined the Southeast Asia'€“ United States (SEA-US) consortium and has announced plans to establish an international submarine cable system connecting the eastern part of Indonesia with the western US.

The effort is part of Telkom's commitment to realize the Indonesia Global Networks program.

'€œThe SEA-US infrastructure is the first undersea cable that will connect the east part of Indonesia to the US.  By connecting this infrastructure to ours, the system will be able to provide the lowest latency from Indonesia to the US compared to the other international undersea cable systems we have today," Telkom president-director Arief Yahya announced on Friday as quoted by kompas.com.

The SEA-US agreement was signed in Jakarta on Thursday by Telin president director Syarif Syarial Ahmad and other consortium members from Globe Telecom, RAM Telecom International (RTI), Hawaiian Telcom, Teleguam Holdings (GTA), GTI Corporation and Telekomunikasi Indonesia International, Inc. (Telkom USA).

Once completed, the US$250 million project will provide an undersea cable system 15,000 kilometers long that connect Indonesia to the US at five points:  Manado, North Sulawesi (Indonesia), Davao (Phillippines), Piti (Guam), Oahu (Hawaii, US), and Los Angeles (California, US).

In addition to featuring low-latency levels, Arief said that the cable would avoid areas prone to volcanic activity, thereby minimizing the risks of damage caused by natural disaster.

When it commences operations in 2016, the system will link Indonesia Global Gateway (Manado-Dumai) with other systems managed by Telin, such as the Southeast Asia-Middle East-Western Europe 5 (SEA-ME-WE 5), Asia America Gateway (AAG), Southeast Asia Japan Cable System (SJCS), Batam Singapore Cable System (BSCS), Dumai Malaka Cable System (DMCS), Thailand-Indonesia-Singapore (TIS) as well as other domestic cable systems.

"We are going to create a configuration of comprehensive networks connecting Asia, Europe, the US and Indonesia with the best quality. We will call it Indonesia Global Networks," he added. (nfo)
