ndonesian Democratic Party of Struggle (PDI-P) politician Effendi Simbolon has said that the upcoming party congress would probably reelect Megawati Soekarnoputri as leader of the party.

'€œThis party has three potential leadership candidates. The first candidate is Ibu Megawati, the second is Ibu Megawati and the third is Ibu Megawati,'€ he said on Saturday as quoted by kompas.com.

He added that his party would probably not propose Jakarta governor and president-elect Joko '€œJokowi'€ Widodo as one of the candidates for chairmanship of the party, as it would ask him to focus on leading the world'€™s most populous Muslim-majority country over the next five years.

Effendi, who is also a member of House of Representatives Commission VII on energy and mineral resources, said that the party would hold its congress next year. However, he explained, his party was now focusing on preparations for a national meeting (Rakernas) scheduled to be held next month.

Megawati, the daughter of Indonesian independence leader and first president Sukarno, has led the PDI-P since 1999. She established the party in 1996 after the PDI split into two factions, namely her faction and the faction of Suryadi, who was backed by former president Suharto. (alz)
