he Medan Police have asked personnel to remain on heightenedalert in anticipating armed robberies in North Sumatra's capital city.
Armed robberies take place almost daily in Medan and surrounding areas, mainly targeting motorcyclists and offices.
In relation to the preparedness of personnel, Medan Police chief Sr. Comr. Nico Afinta said that a recent firearms inspection was aimed at ensuring officers' weapons would function well when required.
'Principally, we must be prepared to use firearms. This is crucial in facing criminals in the field,' Nico said on Wednesday.
Last week, a resident reportedly died as he tried to keep hold of his motorcycle during a robbery. A few days later, a journalist named Roy Simorangkir was shot several times with an airsoft gun as he also tried to hold on to his motorcycle, which attackers wanted to seize from him.
On Aug. 22, two armed robbers targeted a Bank Muamalat branch office on Jl. Krakatau, Medan. They were able to get away with Rp 279 million (US$24,200) in cash.
On Tuesday evening, detectives from the Medan Police managed to apprehend two of the Bank Muamalat robbers, one of whom was reportedly shot for resisting arrest.
