round a thousand residents of Glak village, Sikka regency in East Nusa Tenggara have been isolated for months following the collapse of the only bridge over the Waiara River after it was hit by floods in February 18. The bridge connected their area to another village.
'The residents here have to take an 8-kilometer detour to carry their [banana] crops. After that, they can get a car to cross a bridge,' Mapitara district head Verdinando Lepe said as quoted by Pos Kupang in Tribunnews.com recently.
He said the damaged bridge had also disrupted the maintenance of a school and a healthcare unit in his district because it was the only access route for trucks.
The damaged bridge was built under the administration of former Sikka regent Alex Longginus. During this year's public hearing in the district, residents said they only asked for the reconstruction of the bridge.
'The residents agreed that they would only propose one program, which is the reconstruction of the bridge. Glak village is a production center for bananas,' Verdinando said.
