T

henewly installed North Sumatra police chief Insp. Gen. Eko Hadi Sutedjo vowedthat he would put graft, narcotics and street crime at the top of his list of priorities. He added that he would apply a zero-tolerance policy on these three matters.

'€œThe police should become the people'€™s best friend and helper. Thus, anyone who tries to make it otherwise, let alone being involved in graft, I will cut him loose,'€ Eko said at a farewell party for his predecessor, Insp. Gen. Syarief Gunawan, at the North Sumatra Police headquarters on Friday.

The former National Police Academy governor also stated that stern action would be taken against police officers who were involved in these crimes.

However, Eko acknowledged that it would be a bumpy road ahead. To answer the challenge, he said that he would strive to upgrade the police's ability to identify the factors that led to graft, narcotics and street crimes.(dic)
