Mob torches 17 homes after murder in Papua

A

ngry residents burneddown 17 houses in Arso district, Keerom regency, Papua, on Saturday morningfollowing the killing of a resident, identified as Catur Yudo Wastuti, whileshe cleaned her house.

One of the residents, Indra, said the incident started when a man named Hilarius Gombo stabbed Catur in what appeared to be an unprovoked attack. He said Catur did not have time to protect herself.

'€œWithout saying anything, he [Hilarius] suddenly stabbed her in the neck with his machete. She died at the scene,'€ he told The Jakarta Post on Saturday.

Indra said Hilarius was drunk when he attacked Catur. He added that the two knew each other and that Hilarius had frequently visited Catur'€™s house as a friend.

He said Hilarius'€™ actions had outraged local residents, who had then attempted to avenge the death of their neighbor by setting fire to several houses located close to Hilarius'€™ house.

Keerom Police chief Adj. Sr. Comr. Pasero said the police had detained Hilarius for further questioning and had curbed the riot.

He said a group of police officers were still on standby to maintain order. (alz/dic)
