he Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK) said on Wednesday night that prosecutors' examination of court evidence had confirmed that former Democratic Party chairman Anas Urbaningrum was guilty of corruption and money laundering.
KPK deputy chairman Bambang Widjojanto said KPK prosecutors had found that all corruption and money laundering charges against Anas were true, which had made the prosecutors confident about demanding a hefty ' possibly lifetime ' sentence for Anas, who is slated to hear his sentence demand on Thursday afternoon.
The commission charged Anas with Article 12 of the 1999 Corruption Law for his alleged corruption; while for his suspected money laundering he was charged under Article 3 of the 2002 Money Laundering Law. Collectively, both articles carry a maximum life sentence for a graft convict.
"We met with prosecutors today. Whether the sentence demand will be the maximum or not, just wait until KPK prosecutors read their sentence demand at the Jakarta Corruption Court tomorrow. We are confident that all corruption and money laundering charges have been proven true by court evidence," Bambang said during a press conference at the KPK headquarters on Wednesday.
Bambang added that the fact that Anas attempted to influence witnesses, which the antigraft body considered to be an obstruction of justice, had become one of the incriminating factors that prompted KPK prosecutors to consider a hefty prison term for the disgraced politician.
If KPK prosecutors demand a life sentence for Anas, it will become the second highest such sentence demand in the country.
The commission previously sought a life sentence, which was upheld by the Jakarta Corruption Court, for former Constitutional Court chief justice Akil Mochtar, who was found guilty of corruption and money laundering.
