Suryadharma brands his dismissal as '€˜illegal'€™

Former United Development Party (PPP) chairman Suryadharma Ali said on Friday that his dismissal from the party was invalid.

'€œIt was an illegal dismissal because I was appointed chairman from 2011 to 2015 through a national congress,'€ Suryadharma, the former religious affairs minister, said on Friday as quoted by kompas.com.

He said that when he lead the party, he had appointed Romahurmuziy as secretary-general and Emron Pangkapi, Suharso Monoarfa and current Religious Affairs Minister Lukman Hakim Saifuddin as his deputies. But instead, these figures had overthrown him as chairman this week.

He said that what his secretary-general and deputies had done to him was similar to those ministers who had impeached their president.

'€œIt did not make any sense because I was dismissed by those who I had appointed as my deputies,'€ he said.

On Tuesday evening, an executive meeting at PPP headquarters voted in favor of dismissing Suryadharma, who had led the party since 2007, and appointed its deputy chairman, Emron Pangkapi, known as an opponent of Suryadharma, as acting chairman.

PPP secretary-general Romahurmuziy previously said that Suryadharma did not deserve to be the party'€™s leader because the Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK) had named him a suspect in the haj scandal at his ministry. (alz)
