Comments: New ministers in the same old limos

S

strong>Sept. 14, p4

When the new ministers under president-elect Joko '€œJokowi'€ Widodo drive off after their installment in October, they will be driven in the same old limousines that their predecessors used. One can assume that Jokowi and vice president-elect Jusuf Kalla too will be chauffeur-driven in old cars after their inauguration on Oct. 20.

You are not what you drive, or what you'€™re driven in. Never mind what cars they use, Jokowi and his team will bring a new mindset into an administration that is clearly stuck in old conventional ways. (By Endy M. Bayuni, The Jakarta Post)

I enjoyed reading this article '€” conveying the humble and practical mind-set of Jokowi. Here is a man who will not waste money that belongs to the people and he is very conscious of that.

If the newbies think that there will be lavish drinks and good food, think again. Jokowi realizes that 2015 will have difficulties ahead on the economic front and saving whatever money available is a very prudent way to go, which answers why the old Mercedes Benz cars are being used.

Cabinet members must order food and drinks in the nearby warung. Let'€™s learn from Garuda Indonesia who, to keep the airfares low, no longer distributes free snack boxes on their domestic flights. Instead, passengers must order and pay for the food and drinks they want.

The police have not gone very far in their mental revolution as corruption is the order of the day in that institution mandated to enforce the law.
