ow cost carrier AirAsia Indonesia will connect Medan in North Sumatra and Palembang in South Sumatra next month to enhance its network in Sumatra.
The carrier plans to launch the new route on Oct. 21, operating an Airbus A320 with a total capacity of 180 passengers.
AirAsia Indonesia CEO Sunu Widyatmoko expected the route would help contribute to increasing economic, business, and tourism activities between the two cities in the future.
'The Palembang'Medan flight service also marks AirAsia Indonesia's penetration into the Palembang market for the first time, so we are now part of this city. We hope that our new route will become one of the Palembang people's choices for flying to Medan,' Sunu told The Jakarta Post on Friday.
The Kuala Lumpur-based AirAsia Malaysia arm of AirAsia had already entered the Palembang market, connecting the city with Kuala Lumpur since 2011.
The company aimed at increasing the number of passengers from 7.8 million in 2013 to 8 million by the end of this year. Through August, the airline had recorded a total of 5.31 million passengers.
It currently operates nine domestic routes and 21 international routes.(++++)
