Gerindra Party patron Prabowo Subianto has been appointed as the party's chairman, replacing the late chairman Suhardi.
However, Prabowo said he would only serve as chairman until the party's first national congress next year.
Prabowo won the support of all party cadres in the party's national congress held at the Nusantara Polo club in Bogor and attended by more than 1,500 party members.
'All party elements have agreed to ask Prabowo to lead the party until next year's congress,' Gerindra secretary-general Ahmad Muzani said on Saturday as quoted by tempo.co.
He said Prabowo had decided to take the post because he wanted to help the transition period go smoothly.
Former Gerindra chairman Suhardi passed away on Aug. 28 at Pertamina Hospital, South Jakarta, due to lung cancer.(dic)
