he government is developing a green Deli variety of rose apples ( jambu air), a native fruit of North Sumatra, which will be planted in several areas in Greater Jakarta, targeting middle-class families.
'We are targeting [middle- to upper-income] families because jambu air are pretty expensive. They can sell for Rp 30,000 [US$2.50] per kilogram,' the Agriculture Ministry's horticulture director general, Hasanudin Ibrahim, said while inspecting a jambu air farm in Darmaga regency, Bogor, West Java.
The government is also planning to develop the fruit in Subang and Bandung in West Java. The green Deli jambu air and Crystal variety of guavas will be developed when other fruits are not in season.
Badri, a Crystal guava farmer, has been given 316 green Deli jambu air seeds by the government. 'I learned the techniques for growing green Deli jambu air from a farmer who lives in Medan [North Sumatra]. However, I do not have enough land. I need around 3,000 meters to cultivate that many seeds,' he said.
