upporters of the Red-and-White Coalition led by losing presidential candidate Prabowo Subianto plan to stage a mass rally outside the House of Representatives building on Thursday, in favor of the amendment to the regional election law scrapping direct elections.

Jakarta Police spokesman Sr. Comr. Rikwanto said that the police had been informed of the rally and told that there would be around 3,000 demonstrators.

Rikwanto said the Jakarta Police would assign 1,250 personnel to police the demonstration.

'€œWe will also handle the traffic during the rally,'€ he said on Wednesday as quoted by kompas.com.

The House of Representatives will on Thursday ratify the regional election bill, which has triggered intense public debate on whether regional leaders should be chosen directly by city legislative councils (DPRDs) rather than via direct election.

Parties in the Red-and-White Coalition, including the National Mandate Party (PAN), the Prosperous Justice Party (PKS) and the Gerindra Party, have voiced their support for the bill'€™s amendment, while parties such as the Indonesian Democratic Party of Struggle (PDI-P), Hanura and the National Awakening Party (PKB) have opposed the amendment.

President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono has voiced his opposition to the bill, along with president-elect Joko '€œJokowi'€ Widodo and Deputy Jakarta Governor Basuki '€œAhok'€ Tjahaja Purnama. (dyl/dic)(++++)
