uhammadiyah, the second-largest Muslim organization in Indonesia, respects the government'€™s decision to announce a different date for the celebration of Idul Adha (the Day of Sacrifice), an official with the organization has said.

Muhammadiyah chairman Yunahar Ilyas said that he hoped other religious leaders would also keep calm regarding the alternate date for the celebration of Idul Adha -- Muhammadiyah had announced that it would fall on Oct. 4, which is a Saturday, while the government announced it would fall a day later, namely on Oct. 5.

He said that if religious leaders remained calm, their behavior would be emulated by their followers across Indonesia, the largest Muslim-majority country in the world.

Meanwhile, Syamsul Arif, another official with Muhammadiyah, explained that Muhammadiyah announced that Idul Adha would fall on Oct. 4 after it made calculations based on a hisab hakiki (astronomical observation).

'€œWe will enter the month of Dzulhijjah on Sept. 25, which means that the 10th Dzulhijjah, the day of sacrifice, will fall on Oct. 4,'€ a third Muhammadiyah official, Syamsul Anwar, said on Wednesday through a press release, as quoted by Antara news agency. (alz)
