President-elect Joko âJokowiâ Widodo says any decision taken by the Constitutional Court (MK) on a judicial review to challenge the newly approved Legislative Institution Law (MD3) will be unlikely to disturb his administration
resident-elect Joko 'Jokowi' Widodo says any decision taken by the Constitutional Court (MK) on a judicial review to challenge the newly approved Legislative Institution Law (MD3) will be unlikely to disturb his administration.
The outgoing Jakarta governor further said he was also sure that his administration would remain solid regardless of the composition of the next term of the House of Representatives.
'I'm sure that my administration will remain stable in the future,' said Jokowi, who will take office on Oct. 20, as quoted by kompas.com at his transitional office on Jl. Situbondo 10, Menteng, Central Jakarta, on Sunday evening.
The House proposed the revision of Law No.27/2009 on Legislative Institutions. In the 2009 Law, the House speaker automatically belonged to the election-winning party.
In the newly approved MD3 Law, however, the election-winning party does not automatically obtain the position as House speaker. In it the elections of speakers for both the House and the People's Consultative Assembly (MPR) are conducted through voting. With such a mechanism, the Red-and-White Coalition, which supported the Prabowo Subianto-Hatta Rajasa presidential ticket during the 2014 election, has a big chance to dominate the legislative institutions and this is perceived as a big threat for the Jokowi-Jusuf Kalla administration in carrying out its programs.
Jokowi stayed calm in responding to the circulating political scenarios. He said that during his terms as Surakarta mayor and Jakarta governor, he had also encountered tough situations during which he faced a lack of political support from legislative bodies.
'From my experience [as a mayor] in Surakarta, we lacked support in the Legislative Council. There was also a similar situation when I was governor here [in Jakarta]. So, it's just a normal thing for me,' said Jokowi.
Last week, the Jokowi-led coalition suffered a bitter defeat against the Red-and-White Coalition during a plenary session on the regional elections (Pilkada) bill. His coalition, which supported direct elections for regional heads, could only obtain 135 votes, far fewer than the 226 votes collected by Prabowo's coalition, which supported regional heads being elected through the Regional Legislative Councils (DPRD).
The MK is expected to read out its ruling on the judicial review of the MD3 Law in a hearing session at 4 p.m. on Monday. (alz/ebf)(++++)
