Indonesian Democratic Party of Struggle (PDI-P) secretary-general Tjahjo Kumolo has said that he believes the Democratic Party will join his camp at the House of Representatives for the 2014-2019 term
ndonesian Democratic Party of Struggle (PDI-P) secretary-general Tjahjo Kumolo has said that he believes the Democratic Party will join his camp at the House of Representatives for the 2014-2019 term.
He said that his confidence strengthened after President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono, who is also the chairman of the party, decided to draft a government regulation in lieu of law (Perppu) to bring back direct regional elections, which was in line with PDI-P's stance during a plenary session on the regional elections (Pilkada) law held at the House of Representatives last Friday.
'We fully support the Perppu,' he said on Wednesday as quoted by tempo.co.
He said that he had met several politicians from the Democratic Party to endorse the PP and to persuade them to join his camp. However, the party had yet to make any official decision. Therefore, the PDI-P, which is under the leadership of Megawati Soekarnoputri, will maintain its communication with the Yudhoyono-led party in a bid to encourage it to jump ship to the PDI-P camp.
As of Wednesday, president-elect Joko "Jokowi" Widodo only claimed the support of the PDI-P, the National Awakening Party (PKB), the Hanura Party, the Nasdem Party and the Indonesian Justice and Unity Party (PKPI) at the House Representatives.
Meanwhile, the Red-and-White Coalition, Jokowi's opponent whose lawmakers will dominate the House, consists of the Golkar Party, the Prosperous Justice Party (PKS), the National Mandate Party (PAN), the United Development Party (PPP) and the Gerindra Party. The Democratic Party has still not committed itself to either camp. (alz)(++++)
