Riau gov to stand trial in Jakarta

Riau Governor Annas Maamun, who was caught accepting bribes, is to stand trial in Jakarta.

Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK) spokesman Johan Budi said the governor would be tried at the Jakarta Corruption Court considering that he had been arrested in Cibubur, East Jakarta.

He said that Gulat Manuring, a palm oil businessman who had bribed Annas, would also be tried in Jakarta.

'€œBut there may be changes, so we'€™ll see,'€ said Johan on Monday as quoted by Antara news agency.

KPK investigators arrested Annas, Gulat and seven other people including the governor'€™s wife, driver and adjutant, at Annas'€™ house in the CitraGran housing complex, Cibubur, East Jakarta.

During the operation, the KPK also confiscated S$156,000 (US$122,450) and Rp 500 million ($41,500), which was allegedly to be given by Gulat, who was also chairman of the Indonesian Oil Palm Farmers Association (Apkasindo) Riau chapter, to Annas.

The money was allegedly given to the governor so he would issue a land-conversion permit for Gulat'€™s oil palm plantation business.

On Saturday the KPK also raided a number of locations in Pekanbaru, Riau; namely the governor'€™s official house, his office, Gulat'€™s house and a private office. The antigraft body confiscated documents from these locations to develop the case against Annas and Gulat.
