While hundreds of planes and dozens of warships are slated to take part in the commemoration of the 69th anniversary of the Indonesian Military (TNI) in Surabaya, East Java, on Tuesday, chief Cpl. Partika Subagyo, 51, put on a show of his own in Surakarta, Central Java, on Monday.

The member of the Surakarta military police detachment squat walked for 1.5 kilometers from the Ngarsopuro area to Gladag.

Accompanied by a number of fellow military personnel and a pedicab, Partika, who is called Bagyo among his friends, began his show at 10 a.m. He squat walked amid the traffic on Jl. Slamet Riyadi, which is the busiest main road in the city inhabited by 500,000 people.

Despite the heavy traffic, a number of residents in vehicles showed their solidarity by driving slowly behind Bagyo'€™s group instead of hitting the horns or passing through the group.

Bagyo said he had planned the squat walk show because he wanted to give a unique performance that required a lot of strength.

'€œI want to inspire people, especially younger generations, to always have high spirits and show off their work,'€ he said.

His show received a warm welcome from a number of pedicab drivers around Gladag who presented him with a rattan gift that depicted '€œKopral Besar'€ or Big Cpl. writing, which he received enthusiastically.

After the event, Bagyo and his fellow soldiers distributed 300 meals to pedicab drivers and sanitation workers around the finish point in Gladag.

Passersby and residents around the area also stopped to watch the show.

'€œIt was interesting to see a soldier squat walking in the middle of the road,'€ Setyo, one of a motorists, said.

The squat walk show is among the many unique shows that have been performed by the father of two to grab public attention. In his earlier shows, he ran around the National Monument (Monas) in Central Jakarta 25 times, did nonstop pushups for 12 hours and 25 hours, and showed physical strength by being beaten by 80 people in front of President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono.
