n official with the Indonesian Ulema Council (MUI) says there is no reason for Muslims not to offer their prayers during the funeral of Mayang Prasetyo alias Febri Endriansyah, a transgender who was mutilated in Brisbane, Australia, by her boyfriend.
The statement was issued following a recent rejection from some neighbors who claimed that they could not pray for her solely because she had undergone genital surgery, changing her sexual status from a man to a woman.
'It does not matter that she underwent surgery. She was still a devout Muslim. Therefore it is mandatory for us to pray for her,' MUI Lampung branch secretary Refliyanto said on Friday.
Bandarlampung Mayor Herman HN said he had ordered the head of Kedaton district, where Mayang's parents reside, to persuade the neighbors to welcome the remains and pray for her during the funeral.
Mayang was mutilated by her boyfriend, identified as Marcus Volker, in Brisbane. Volker committed suicide before the police could question him regarding his motive. (dic)
