everal executives of the United Development Party (PPP) met with president-elect Joko "Jokowi" Widodo at his official residence in Menteng, Central Jakarta, on Thursday evening to confirm that their party had decided to join his Great Indonesia Coalition.
The meeting took place just a few hours after Romahurmuziy was elected the party's new chairman at a national congress held in Surabaya, East Java, on Thursday afternoon.
"[This meeting] means that we have moved to the Great Indonesia Coalition. Insyallah [God willing]," PPP deputy secretary-general Syaifullah Tamliha told reporters after the three-hour meeting, as quoted by kompas.com.
He said that his party would sign an agreement with Jokowi's coalition as soon as possible.
He also said that no political deals were made between Jokowi and PPP after the party jumped ship from the Gerindra Party-led Red-and-White Coalition.
"No political deals were made [with Jokowi]," he said.
Jokowi previously said that he would award at least one ministerial post to PPP if the party decided to move to his camp.
Separately, PPP sharia board chief Maimun Zubair said that the congress held in Surabaya was invalid because the faction led by Romahurmuziy had yet to hold an islah (reconciliation) with the faction led by Suryadharma Ali, former PPP chairman.
However, Romahurmuziy insisted that the Surabaya congress was valid because it was attended by 821 members of the party's 1,153 regional board members across the archipelago. (alz)
