resident-elect Joko Widodo met with Gerindra Party chief patron and defeated presidential candidate Prabowo Subianto on Friday at the latter's home on Jl. Kertanegara 4 in Kebayoran Baru in South Jakarta.
The meeting, which lasted 15 minutes, was the first between the two since the hard-fought presidential election in July.
After the meeting, Prabowo said that he would not let their different political views divide the country.
"We have to unite because we are one nation," he said during a press conference.
"I have instructed my party and my supporters to support Joko Widodo and the government he will lead," he added. He said that during the meeting, he told Jokowi that he would criticize him if he made a policy that burdened the people.
Meanwhile, Jokowi said that his government would be ready to be monitored by Prabowo because such monitoring would create a balance between executive branch and legislative.
"[In my administration] there will be a party who will monitor, supervise and criticize. Everything is good. Thank you," he said.
Jokowi said that he also wished Prabowo, who turned 63 on Friday, a happy birthday.
Prabowo said that he was honored by Jokowi's visit. (alz)
