Surabaya working on streetcar project

S

urabaya mayor Tri Rismaharini has announced that the administration is working on a streetcar project called Trem Surabaya, which will be proposed to the new Joko '€œJokowi'€ Widodo and Jusuf Kalla administration after it takes office on Oct.20.

Risma said that together with state rail company PT KAI as the streetcar operator, she had surveyed potential track locations in the city.

'€œAfter the inauguration, we will present the project'€™s master plan and budget proposal to the new Jokowi-Kalla Cabinet,'€ she said as quoted by kontan.co.id in Surabaya on Thursday.

Risma said the streetcar service would run along a 17-kilometer-long route in areas across Surabaya using KAI'€™s unused railways. The railways cover the Jl.Diponegoro-Pandegiling-Darmo-Pahlawan Monument route, Turi Market-Ujung route, and Wonokromo-Jembatan Merah route.

'€œIt is estimated that the project will cost Rp 2.2 trillion (US$178.94 million),'€ said Risma.

KAI has reportedly agreed to help finance the project.

KAI predicts the project will cost between Rp 400 billion and Rp 800 billion.

Risma said she was optimistic that the project would be realized.

Construction was expected to begin in one month, while it would take about 18 months to complete as the cars needed to be imported, she said. (dyl/ebf)
